A new way of drinking the Spanish sparkling wine named ‘cava’ and the champagne has come into our lives. And it does it with the intention of staying. It is a new concept that proposes drinking cava with plenty of ice and in a balloon glass to cool off on the hottest summer nights. Although once you try it, you will see that this idea is suitable for any time of the year.

As Cristina Cordon, President of ITV Ice Makers, explains to us, ice is gaining more and more prominence in cocktails and this trend has been joined by the world of champagne and cavas where brands such as Moët, Freixenet or Anna Cordorniu stand out.

What advantages does ice bring to champagne?

The ice in the champagne intensifies the taste phase and for this reason it becomes the perfect complement for these new champagnes.

At ITV we recommend two types of cubes depending on the glass that is being.

  • For flute glasses, the Alfa cube is the one that best suits;
  • For a balloon or cabernet glass, we recommend the Delta Max cube, which would allow to maintain the freshness and intensity of flavour of the drink without watering it down.

New brands of champagne that is drunk with ice

In that sense, there are several brands that have opted for this new project.

1.Estelle & Fortuna

It is an important winery based in Treviso, Italy, which arrives for the first time in Spain.

Its two high-quality champagnes stand out, the Gran Rosé Brut and the Gran Cuvée Brut, which can be drunk with ice without losing quality and flavour. Its method is 100% artisanal in the harvest as well as in the selection and vinification.

2. Freixenet ICE

The new Freixenet Ice has been created to be enjoyed with ice, in a balloon glass; we can also mix it with our favorite flavors: raspberry, kiwi, lime, or lemon. In the heat of the night, the prestigious barman Javier De Las Muelas bets for mixing it into original cocktails: with peach liquor, St. Germain, ginger and grapefruit… and always, always, with ITV ice. The result, excellent and very refreshing. This cava is elaborated through a blend of Macabeo, Xarel.lo, and Parellada wines, with a touch of Chardonnay, and has a fine and elegant bubble in addition to a fruity aroma.

3. Moët Ice

And if cava can be taken with ice, why not venture also with champagne. That is what they have thought at Moët & Chandon, who at the start of the year presented its Moët Ice Impérial line. It is the first and only champagne specially created for enjoying with ice. A new experience that stands out for its vivid fruit, its seductive palate, and its elegant maturity.  Our suggestion is to always put at least three or four ice cubes, as this is essential for “relieving” the fruit intensity and accentuating its freshness. Combine it afterwards with mint leaves, white grape or lime zest, cucumber peel, a very thin ginger slice, cardamom seeds, and berries (strawberries, raspberries.)

4. Anna Codorniu Sweet Edition

Another cava brand that has joined the cava on ice trend is Codorniu. It does so with the ‘Anna Codorniu Sweet Edition’ line, a sweeter version of its product that allows for different combinations. Among them, one of the most successful and recommended ones is serving cava in a wide glass with plenty of ice.

5. J.P. Chenet Ice Edition

Other than cava and champagne, another surprising novelty of the year has been getting to know the first wine for drinking with ice from J.P. Chenet. The French market leader brand offers it through its ‘ J.P. Chenet Ice Edition’ line. We will soon delve into this world through a new post.
