SNOWY OWL

These amazing animals live in the north of the Arctic Circle. Its size is bigger than normal owls. Males are white practically on its totality of feathers; females on the other hand can present darker zones and even be brown coloured. They both have a shiny yellow iris. Unfortunately it is one of the species Finland has officially declared in danger of extinction.  The reason for this is the lack of food in their habitat; this forces them to travel even to Central Europe searching for nourishment.  Their diet is mainly made of rodents and smaller birds.

ARCTIC HARE

These precious animals can be found in the extreme climate of the North American tundra. They survive even though they have no period of hibernation thanks to a variety of adaptations. They have a very thick skin that preserves the heat with high efficiency. Their ears are shorter at the point because the surface of skins is small so heat isn’t lost easily. Occasionally de Arctic Hares dig holes in the snow where they gather together. This is an animal that is slightly bigger than normal rabbits; their back legs are visibly bigger. They are very fast and can reach 60 kilometers per hour. Their fur is white and shiny during the winter, this makes it easy for them to camouflage in the snow seasons. In spring they change to a

ARCTIC WOLF

This specie is also known and polar Wolf and it is a subspecies of the grey wolf. Their most distinctive characteristic is their white fur. We can find them in North America and reaching even Greenland and the Canadian Arctic. Normally they exist in places where temperatures are extreme even reaching -30 degrees Celsius. Their fur is thick and very insulating, this is very important to protect them from the wind and snow. They are a little smaller than grey wolfs and as Arctic hares they have less skin surface to keep the corporal heat. Thanks to this they are more agile and faster than other bigger animals. They have dark coffee or shiny yellow eyes. Socially their structure is built in small groups, from 5 to 6 members which have a leader. Wolverines have a very important role and are protected by the rest of the pack.

POLAR BEAR

This is one of the most representative habitants of the Arctic, but do you really know about Polar Bears? It is one of the biggest land-carnivorous. It is located in frozen zones of the north hemisphere. One of the most surprising characteristics is the colour of its fur which is not white as most of people think. The sunlight reflects on the fur, and because it’s surrounded by ice it creates a false sensation of whiteness. The fur is actually translucent and it is made out of millions of hollow hairs that create insulation and protects the bear from low temperatures. It is considered a super predator of the Artic, it feeds on animals that they hunt on land or ice, but they also feed on belugas and sea dogs when they open holes on the ice to breath.
