Halloween night is approaching and with it, the desire to organise a memorable party in which no detail is spared. Dressing up as vampires, zombies, ghosts, aliens or any television or cinema personality are only some of the ideas that many of us have in mind. But if we are going to work hard on creating a good disguise, we can’t neglect the atmosphere. And there, we have a trick that you may undoubtedly find very useful.

One of the decorative elements that must be around the house or the venue where the party is to be held, are the indispensible pumpkins with their typical carved Halloween faces. You should also have cobwebs, candles and dim light. And for the final touch? Smoke around your feet!

How can you do this? It’s easier than you think. You will need to make dry ice. This type of ice is made by freezing liquid CO2. Once hardened, water at boiling point is poured over it and, by means of sublimation, this dry ice will go directly from the solid to the gaseous state – without going through the intermediate liquid one – thus creating a totally horrific and terrifying atmosphere as you can see in the video below.

When you start this experiment it is important that you have practised beforehand and take great care, because dry ice is at a very low temperature (-78ºC) and handling it without due precautions cause burns or painful ulcerations. It is advisable to use gloves and never touch the dry ice with wet or damp hands given that the water freezes instantly and adheres to the hand.

Another option: Halloween Cocktails

If we have created the atmosphere with smoke from dry ice, why not go further and put the icing on the cake? From ITV-Ice Makers we also suggest that you make your cocktails look terrifying. But watch out, this is not done in the same way. In this case we shall use nitrogen. As an example here you have the recipe for the Medianoche Maria (Midnight Mary). You will need:

  • 1 ½ parts of aquavit, gin or tequila
  • ½ part of Benedictine
  • ¾ part of lemon juice
  • ¼ part of galangal syrup
  • ¼ part of simple syrup
  • 1 ¼ parts of clarified tomato
  • Bitter ash
  • Nitrogen frozen basil foam
  • Decorated with tomato and basil leaves

Preparation:

All you have to do is have put the nitrogen into a recipient, add the crushed basil and then pour the drink resulting from the mixture of all the ingredients over it.
