Con solo ver las fotos ya parece que nos salimos de la realidad. Estamos en una película, en la imagen de un cuento de hadas. O eso parece, pero no. Es Harbin, una ciudad de China que desde 1963 acoge cada año uno de los principales festivales de esculturas de hielo y nieve que se celebran en el mundo. Quizá solo lo puedan supere o igualar los festivales de Sapporo (Japón), el Carnaval de Quebec (Canadá) o la fiesta del esquí de Noruega.
Sin duda, cuando esta ciudad se transforma, se convierte en uno de los atractivos turísticos más impresionantes del gigante asiático. Hasta allí se desplazan miles de turistas de dentro y fuera del país. ¿Y cuándo se celebra? Suele ser nada más arrancar el año y se prolonga hasta casi marzo.
¿Cómo lo hacen? En principio, es más fácil de lo que parece. Al menos en lo que iluminación se refiere. Cuando se acerca la fecha, cientos de esculturas hechas con bloques de hielo son iluminadas con luces LED para darle más vida. Esto crea un auténtico espectáculo que cada año moviliza a más de 7 000 artistas, entre los que sobresalen los mejores escultores de hielo de China.
Lo más sorprendente de todo es averiguar que las piezas miden más de 26 metros de altura y 117 metros de ancho. Estas figuras suelen representar diferentes asuntos relacionados con países, culturas y estilos, así como animales y aspectos místicos. Normalmente se elaboran con tecnología muy variada que va desde el moderno láser al tradicional farol de hielo.
De hecho, en esta ciudad se registró en el libro Guiness de los Récords la escultura de nieve más grande del mundo: 250 metros de longitud y un volumen de 13.000 metros cúbicos de nieve. La obra constaba de dos partes, las Cataratas del Niágara y el Cruce del Estrecho de Bering.
Además de disfrutar del paisaje, en la ciudad se pueden hacer miles de deportes, actividades y planes para pasarlo en grande. Incluso se montan toboganes de colores que garantizan que vuelvas a casa con una sonrisa.
Ice Destinations: Harbin, a Fairy Tale City
Just looking at the pictures it looks like we are out of reality. We are in a movie, into a fairy tale. But it’s only an illusion. What you see is Harbin, a Chinese city that since 1963 holds one of the main ice sculpture festivals in the world. It can only be compared to Sapporo Festival (Japan), Quebec Winter Carnival (Canada) or Holmenkollen Ski Festival (Norway).
When this city transforms, it is, no doubt, one of the most amazing tourist attractions from the Asian giant. Thousands of tourist from in and out the country go there. When is it held? It usually starts at the beginning of the year and lasts almost until March.
How do they do it? It is easier than it seems. At least as for lighting. When it is time, hundreds of sculptures made out of ice blocks are lighted with LED lights to make them livelier. This creates a spectacular environment that moves each year more than 7,000 artists, among whom you can find China’s best ice sculptors.
What will amaze you the most is that sculptures are more than 26 metres high and 117 metres wide. These sculptures usually represent countries, cultures and styles, as well as animals and mystic recreations. They are crafted with different techniques that range from laser cuts to the traditional ice lantern.
In fact, this city entered the Guinness Book of Records with the biggest snow sculpture in the world: 250 metres long and a volume of 13,000 cubic metres of snow. The sculpture had two parts, Niagara Falls and the Bering Strait crossing.
Apart from enjoying the landscape, the city offers a myriad of sports, activities and plans for having a great time. There are even coloured ice toboggans that guarantee you’ll go back home with a smile.
