Ice has always been an element that has had an attraction for humanity, both because of its uses and the impossible shapes that it has adopted in different remote areas of the planet. Little by little, the human being has learned to play with the changing morphology of ice and apply it to his daily life. So much so, that has even become possible to create frozen hairdos that are curious to say the least.

So, for those of you who want to travel and enjoy yourselves at the same time, we have the perfect plan for the coming winter. All you have to do is to get on a plane to Canada and travel to a town in northwest of the country. There, in Whitehorse, are the Takhini hot springs, which are maintained at a temperature of over 40ºC all the year round, despite the fact that that outside may be at -30ºC.

It is precisely this difference between temperatures that means that, when you take your head out of the hot water, your hair goes from being at a temperature of 40ºC to -30ºC. So that the hair is frozen almost immediately, making it possible for you to give it any form you want.

These thermal springs are among the most famous in Canada. To reach them you have to take a one and a half hour bus journey from Whitehorse. The route crosses a series of spectacular forests and snow covered areas. This beautiful countryside alone makes the journey worthwhile, given that we are in one of the most inhospitable and wild regions on the planet.Captura-de-pantalla-2015-03-10-a-las-11.34.34

Once in the Takhini hot springs, we can take a bath however cold it is outside. Most probably, at -30ºC you are having such a bad time that you don’t even want to think about taking a bath, but when you put one hand in and find how comfortable you can be inside, you won’t think about it twice. However, when you finally decide to get out, dry your hair carefully unless you want to have a permanent frozen hairdo.

As we have already said, it has an immediate effect, even on the eyelashes, and every winter there is a frozen hairdo competition, with a modest cash prize of 150 Canadian dollars for the winner.

The exact location of the lake is in the extreme northwest of the country, very close to Alaska. It is the effective capital of the Yukon Territory. Another of nature’s spectacles that can be seen there are its rivers, which flow with such a force that spectacular rapids are formed.

Something that must be very much taken into account when travelling to areas near to the poles is that the activities, that can be carried out depend on the time of the year. During the summer, there is almost permanent daylight and the tourist companies usually dispense with the trip to the hot springs to organise others such as exploration, imitating the Klondike gold-seekers.

ITV-Ice Makers recommends you to visit it during the winter when, apart from enjoying yourselves in the hot springs and seeing the countryside, they also organise excursions on snowmobiles over the Old Dawson trail or over the old railway routes.
